Course Introduction

The prevention of malocclusion has been a longstanding issue in dentistry, which deals with the health of the masticatory organ. However, the reality is that we are still far from achieving dental care that can completely prevent malocclusion, despite many years of research results.

Current preventive treatment of occlusion involves taking some measures at an early stage when the problem develops through interceptive orthodontics. Even so, the fundamental problem of malocclusion has not been resolved because only the apparent defect is addressed during the growth stage.

The cause of malocclusion is that incorrect occlusion induces mandibular displacement and associated dysfunction. In other words, the crucial point is the abnormality of mandibular position. The mandible of Homo sapiens has evolved into a joint that presents a morphological evolutionary risk of being prone to deviation. Additionally, the terminal plane of the deciduous dentition in humans is more vertical (Class II) compared to that of primates (primates exhibit Class I).

In other words, the development of human occlusion faces the challenging task of transitioning from innate skeletal Class II and Class II occlusion to skeletal Class I and Class I occlusion. Failure to achieve this carries the risk of dysfunction. This is why early preventive treatment of occlusion is necessary.
